Head of Nursing Services
When looking at weight loss options, it can be a bit overwhelming. Trying to figure out which option is best suited for you, is also difficult. There’s always the question, “Am I making the right decision, for me?”
How do I tease out the details?
Two popular options that are becoming more mainstream are ESG (Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Stomach Tightening) and GLP1-agonists, like Wegovy. Two of our Bariendo doctors, Dr. Chris Thompson and Dr. Pichamol Jirapinyo, recently releases a study, comparing cost of these popular and effective options.
Let’s review these choices, and then dive a little deeper.
ESG, Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Stomach Tightening, is an incisionless procedure, where sutures are placed to fold the stomach in, tightening it, and making it much smaller. Physically making you fuller quicker and for longer. It takes about an hour to perform and has lifelong results.
Medications like Wegovy and Zepbound, are prescriptions. They require weekly injections and are also lifelong for lasting results.
The upfront initial cost of medications may seem less. Each month, you pay a certain amount, get your medication and inject weekly. Seems simple enough. But that mean months of payments, prescriptions, and appointments. You will need to see a physician regularly to monitor your progress, and potentially have lab work done to monitor your health. Availability is also a concern. There are shortages of almost all forms of these medications. It is not magic, you will need to adjust your lifestyle and eating habits. And lastly, there are many people who experience side effects, like nausea, constipation and vomiting.
ESG Stomach Tightening, is a one-time procedure. Yes, the initial cost seems high, but it’s one time. There are not monthly costs for the procedure. Collectively patients save a significant amount of money and time by having the ESG procedure. It does require a 1hr procedure, and planning. It does require dietary restrictions for a short while. And like medication, it does require lifestyle modification. Many people finance it for a few months, lessening the burden.
So, like all medical decisions, you need to make the choice that is right for you and your life. But, like always, I encourage you to do your research. Learn and ask questions. Do the math and see what makes more sense for you. You are considering a life changing step, make it the right one.
