What is Gastric Balloon?

A gastric balloon is a grapefruit-sized round ball that sits in your stomach, offering a reversible and non-surgical option for weight loss. The balloon is placed through the mouth into your stomach while you sleep.

The procedure takes 15 minutes; there is no scar, and you go home on the same day. After 6 months, the doctor performs another endoscopy to remove the balloon. With the balloon in your stomach, you feel full sooner, stay full longer, and tend to eat less overall.

Expected results from Gastric Balloon

Research indicates that Gastric Balloon results in an average weight loss of 13.2% six months after placement, and 11.3% at the 12-month mark 1. For an individual weighing 230 lbs at the start, this translates to a loss of 25 lbs. These results are 3.1 times more effective than weight loss achieved through diet and exercise alone 2.

The long-term effectiveness of this procedure hinges on participants’ commitment to maintain and adapt their diet and exercise habits beyond the 12-month period.

Why Gastric Balloon works

With the Gastric Balloon in place, you will feel full sooner as it occupies space in your stomach. Additionally, it slows down the process of gastric emptying, which means food stays in your stomach longer, prolonging the feeling of hungry between meals3. This 6-month duration with the balloon offers a unique chance to reshape your eating habits and redefine your relationship with food.

FAQs

What is recovery like after a gastric balloon?

Patients go home on the same day. Most take a few days off to recover at home before returning to work. After the procedure, patients follow a full liquid meal plan, which includes protein shakes and similar products, then transition to a soft diet, which includes easy-to-eat foods such as oatmeal and bananas, and then return to regular eating.

Is the gastric balloon procedure reversible?

Yes, this procedure is completely reversible. Your doctor can remove the balloon at any time before 6 months, if needed.

Will I gain weight after balloon removal?

Unlike ESG/EGP, you may gain weight back after balloon removal. Medications can be used to help limit this.

How much does a gastric balloon procedure cost?

A gastric balloon procedure costs $6,995, which includes balloon removal at 6 months and 10 visits with your Bariendo healthcare team. Financing options are available.
